Chapter 10
I was grateful for the time to myself as I picked up food. I waited on the bench at The Screening Attic, trying to organize my thoughts. I had a lot to processâthe premonition, the attack, and all of its implications. While I couldnât say the vision I had was enjoyable, I was so grateful it had occurred. Todd could have been seriously hurt or worse. Would premonitions be a normal part of my life now, or was this a special case? Before I met Irene a few weeks back, I hadnât even considered the possibility that I had precognitive capabilitiesâthat I could see the future. I was comfortable in my little psychic bubble, experiencing the occasional memory imprint and communicating with animals. Now I was investigating crimes and having visions of the future. If only I could have seen a vision of Toddâs attacker before they hid their face.
At least we had gained some information from the incident. The person we were looking for was relatively short, but I couldnât say exactly how short. I had been too far away. I had glimpsed white skin on the bit of their face that was exposed, though. I pulled out my phone, swiping through the pictures of our suspects. I could eliminate one person for sureâa woman named Gail. I thought her skin was a bit too dark, but her chest was definitely way too large to have been hiding under the hoodie the attacker was wearing. I could also cross Bertram and Irene off my list, as the Catherwood siblings were all together during the incident. I had no regrets about suspecting Bertram, given his attitude towards me, but I felt bad for even considering Irene. Why had I let Bertram get in my head like that? My instincts about Irene were solidâshe would never do something to hurt Todd.
I checked my notifications for the flower deliveries. My conclusion about Gail was correct. She had signed for her flowers. I bet she was pretty confused about the mysterious gift, but I hoped she would enjoy the bouquet. One of the men had signed too. The other three people werenât home, but at least we were down from five to three eBay suspects. Iâd have to tell Ori that her idea worked.
The food was ready before I could strategize further. I realized I was starving. The attack had thrown the whole day off. It was going to get dark soon. I made my way to my car, stealing french fries from the food bags as I walked. I was so tired. I was contemplating if I could get away with a short nap in my car when my phone rang. I checked the screen as I sat down in the driverâs seat. It was Ori. She must have talked to Rudi.
I answered reluctantly, worried I was about to get an earful from my bestie. âWell, hello there. I was thinking about you a few seconds ago! I take it you talked to Rudi and are calling to yell at me about putting myself in danger?â
âUmm, no.
